The solar system comprises of nine planets but our planet Earth is the most unique of them all on the virtue of being the only planet to harbor life ,till date. This is due to the pleasant atmospheric conditions able enough to provide life supporting conditions for living things. Below are listed almost everything you wanted to know about the beautiful place we inhabit. Although we use the Old English name Earth for our planet it has been called by several other names by past civilisation which include, Tellus the Roman goddess of the Earth and the symbol of fertility, Gaia the ancient Greek earth goddess and of course Terra from the Latin meaning earth. From the space traveller's perspective, Earth's classic image is that of a bluish ball with shifting white clouds, the result of an atmosphere actively sustained by its widespread life. Earth is distinguished as having blue waters, green and brown land masses and white clouds. Because of atmospheric conditions, Earth is the only planet that is capable of possessing water ,in liquid form, on it's surface. The Earth's surface is comprised of 71% water. Unlike the other terrestrial planets, the Earth's crust is divided into several solid plates which float independently on the hot mantle below. At present, there are eight major plates :- North American Plate South American Plate Eurasian Plate African Plate Antarctic Plate Indian-Australian Plate Pacific Plate Nazca Plate The earth is made of the following chemical elements: oxygen 46.6 % silicon 27.7 % aluminum 8.1 % iron 5 % calcium 3.6% sodium 2.8 % potassium 2.6% magnesium 2.1 % other 1.5 % Scientists estimate that more than three-fourths of Earth’s surface is of volcanic origin — that is, rocks either erupted by volcanoes or molten rock that cooled below ground and has subsequently been exposed at the surface. Most of Earth’s volcanic rocks are found on the sea floor. Earth consists of five parts-atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, mantle and core. The life-supporting atmosphere of the earth is made up of the following If present in larger amounts, most of these latter elements would be poisonous to humans. Earth is approximately 93 million miles away from the sun. Earth has a diameter of 12,756 km . The distance from the surface of Earth to the center is about 3,963 miles. Earth is 2/3 water. but all the fresh water streams only represent one hundredth of one percent. About 1/3 of the Earth's surface is desert. Earth has only one moon, but it is the only body in the solar system besides Earth that has had human visitors. The gravitational pull of the earth is 9.8 meters per second per second . The Earth's orbit is an ellipse. The tilt of the Earth's axis is responsible for seasons. Without the tilt of the earth's axis, we wouldn't have seasons. The highest point on earth is Mt Everest (29, 028 above sea level) The lowest point on earth is Dead Sea (1,302 below sea level) Antarctica is the coldest place on earth.Ninety percent of the world's ice covers Antarctica. This ice also represents seventy percent of all the fresh water in the world. The lowest dry point on Earth is the shore of the Dead Sea in the Middle East.It is about 1,300 feet (400 meters) below sea level. The driest place on Earth ia Arica, in Chile. It gets just 0.03 inches (0.76 millimeters) of rain per year. The Grand Canyon is the world’s largest canyon system. Lake Baikal in the south central part of Siberia is the deepest lake on this Earth. It is 5,712 feet (1.7 kilometers) deep. Caspian Sea is the largest lake on this Earth. Lloro, Colombia, which averages averages 523.6 inches of rainfall a year, is the wettest place. The Pacific Ocean which covers 64 million square miles is the largest ocean. About 540 volcanoes on land are known to have erupted in historic times. This excludes the number of undersea volcanoes which have erupted through history. The world’s deadliest recorded earthquake occurred in 1557 in central China. There are approximately 10 million species of living things on earth. Only 11 percent of the earth's surface is used to grow food. If the Earth was any closer to the Sun, it would be too hot to support life. If the Earth was any farther away from the Sun, it would be too cold to support life. One persistent question that have kept the scientists and the astronomers busy is whether the Earth will always be there or not. Astronomers believe that another few billion years, and the sun will swell so large as to envelop this Earth which will eventually be vaporized.. One mathematical calculation shows it would be theoretically possible for humans to move the Earth to a more distant and pleasant orbit and evade the disaster. |
