How the Lizards got their MarkingsYou must have seen the chameleon and the monitor-lizard?Long long ago, they were very close pals. They stayed together, played together, hunted together and even ate together in a small cave in a jungle. One day the great chameleon and the great monitor-lizard went hunting into the deeper regions of the jungle. As usual, they went together and for long they ran after worms and other insects till they had their fill and could move no longer. Exhausted by the effort they put in all morning, they decided to rest beside a tree. Suddenly, they saw a small tortoise walking by. "Look, how pretty he looks with all those designs on his back." remarked the monitor-lizard. The chameleon nodded in assent. "Wish we could have some beautiful designs on us too" he said. Both of them remained silemnt for sometime. Then the chameleon said to the monitor-lizard, "Can't we draw patterns on our bodies ourselves? You must scratch a nice pattern on my back." The monitor-lizard found it a great idea. He scratched and scratched on the chameleon's back with its fine paws till he had made some fine, even patterns on his back. Then the monitor-lizard asked the chameleon to return the favour to him. Eager to find out his own prowess at drawing, the chameleon began to scratch on his friend's back. But no sooner had he begun to work than there came the sound of a dog barking. A man was hunting in the forest with his dog. The chameleon was afraid. "Let us move from here." said he. "It is far away friend. Wait till we finish with our designs. If it comes any nearer, we shall run back home." replied the monitor-lizard. The chameleon was very scared but he was no ready to show his fear before his friend, lest he may laugh at him. So he went ahead with making his designs, but his fingers shook, and the pretty design he was making went all askew. The sharp barks came nearer and nearer to the two lizards. "Let us run while there is still time." said the chameleon. "Relax my friend. It is still away. Are you scared?" laughed the monitor-lizard. But the chameleon had had enough. He stopped his work and ran away, leaving the Monitor with a very shabby marking on his back. That is why you can see that the monitor-lizard is not so pretty as the chameleon. |
