Rukmini - The Princess Who Chose Krishna

Introduction:

Rukmini was the princess of Vidarbha and daughter of King Bhishmaka. Though surrounded by riches, her heart belonged to Krishna, whom she had never even met. Tales of his wisdom, strength, and kindness had reached her ears, and in her heart, she knew he was the one she wanted to marry.

The Letter of Love

But not everyone agreed. Her brother Rukmi had different plans. He had arranged her marriage to Shishupal, someone Rukmini neither loved nor respected. Worried and heartbroken, she sent a secret letter to Krishna, asking him to come and take her away before the wedding.

In the letter, she wrote, "Come like a hero, and take me as your bride. If you delay even a moment, I will be forced into a marriage I do not want."

Krishna's Response

Krishna didn't wait. With Balarama and a small force, he set out for Vidarbha. On the day of the wedding, Rukmini went to the temple for prayers, just as Krishna had planned. He arrived at the temple gates, lifted her onto his chariot, and sped off.

Chased by Rukmi

Rukmi, furious that his plans had failed, gave chase. A fierce battle followed. Krishna defeated Rukmi and was about to end his life, but Rukmini pleaded for mercy. Krishna spared him-but shaved off half his hair and moustache, humiliating him deeply.

  • True love wins: Rukmini chose her path and stood by it.
  • Krishna kept his promise: Not just as a god, but as a friend and protector.
  • Power with compassion: Even in battle, Krishna listened to Rukmini's plea.

Rukmini and Krishna returned to Dwarka and were married in a grand ceremony. That day, the world saw not just a divine union-but a love story that would be remembered forever.
