The Christmas Hedgehog
When a little hedgehog wakes up during winter instead of hibernating, he discovers the magic of Christmas for the first time.
Snowflakes drifted gently across the forest, sparkling like tiny stars. Deep inside a cozy burrow lay a small hedgehog named Nibble, curled into a tight ball. He should have been fast asleep for the whole winter-but a jingling sound echoed in the distance.
Jingle… jingle…
Nibble's eyes fluttered open.
"What's that sound?" he whispered, poking his nose out of the burrow. The cold air tickled his whiskers, but the strange jingling kept tugging at his curiosity.
Nibble scampered through the snow, leaving tiny pawprints behind him. The forest looked completely different in winter-silvery, quiet, and sparkling under the moon. Suddenly, he spotted a soft golden glow between the trees.
Nibble hurried toward it.
In a clearing stood a tall evergreen tree shimmering with twinkling lights, ribbons, and ornaments. Tiny creatures scurried below it-mice, rabbits, squirrels, and even a family of owls. They were decorating the tree together.
"Welcome!" squeaked a rabbit. "You woke up just in time for Christmas!"
"Christmas?" Nibble tilted his head. "What's Christmas?"
The animals gasped.
"You've never seen Christmas?" the mice squealed. "It's the most magical night of the year!"
Nibble watched as the animals hung shiny berries on branches, placed acorns wrapped in leaves beneath the tree, and sang songs that made the whole forest glow. The warmth and joy made his tiny heart flutter.
But suddenly-whoosh! a big gust of wind blew through the forest. The top ornament, a bright red crystal berry, flew off the tree and disappeared into the snowy darkness.
"Oh no!" cried the animals. "Without the berry, the forest star won't shine! Santa won't see our tree!"
Nibble puffed up. "I'll find it!"
Before anyone could protest, he scurried off. He squeezed under fallen logs, rolled through deep snow, and followed the faint red glow until he spotted the crystal berry stuck on a frozen branch high above.
Nibble gulped-it was too high.
But then he remembered something: hedgehogs could roll.
He backed up, ran as fast as his tiny legs could move, curled into a ball, and launched himself up the snowy mound. Boing! He bounced off the mound, hit the tree trunk gently, and the berry shook loose-falling right into the snow beside him.
Triumphant, Nibble carried the glowing berry back to the clearing. All the animals cheered.
"You saved Christmas!" the owls hooted.
They lifted Nibble up and placed the shining berry back on top of the tree. Instantly, a warm golden light filled the forest, brighter than the moon, brighter than the stars.
Just then, soft bells jingled above them-Jingle, jingle, jingle!-and a silhouette flew across the sky.
"It's Santa!" the animals whispered.
Nibble's eyes sparkled. Magic tingled in the air around him.
That night, Nibble curled up under the glowing Christmas tree, surrounded by new friends, warm treats, and joyful songs. For the first time in his life, he felt truly awake-wide awake with wonder.
From that day on, every winter, Nibble woke up just long enough to celebrate Christmas, carry the crystal berry to the top of the tree, and remind everyone that even the smallest creatures can bring the greatest magic.
