The lineup

3 tricks in this category, each with a "you will need" list and a secret you can tap open when you're ready.

1 Trick 1

Cups and Balls

One of the oldest tricks in magic. A small ball vanishes from under one cup and turns up under another, again and again.

  • 3 opaque cups
  • 1 small soft ball (a scrunched-up piece of foil or paper works too)
Reveal the secret
  1. Line up the three cups upside down in a row and place the ball on top of the middle cup.
  2. Lift the middle cup to β€œload” the ball inside it, then set it back down β€” but secretly let the ball roll into your palm instead of the cup.
  3. Tap the top of the cup and say the magic word, then lift it to show the ball is β€œgone.”
  4. Casually lift the end cup with the same hand that's palming the ball, secretly leaving the ball underneath it as you set the cup back down.
  5. Lift that end cup again to reveal the ball has β€œtraveled” across.

Practice tip: start with just one cup and one ball until the palming move feels natural, then add the second and third cup.

2 Trick 2

The Impossible Knot

Hold both ends of a loose rope, give it one sharp shake, and a perfect knot appears in the middle β€” as if it tied itself.

  • 1 soft rope or thick string, about 3 feet long
Reveal the secret
  1. Before showing the trick, secretly tie a loose, hidden knot near one end of the rope and keep it pinched shut in your fist.
  2. Hold that end in your fist and the other end loosely in your other hand, letting the rope drape naturally.
  3. Announce that you'll make a knot appear with a single shake.
  4. Give the rope one confident downward shake while opening the fist that hides the pre-tied knot.
  5. The hidden knot slides into view at the exact moment of the shake, timed to look like it formed from nowhere.

Practice tip: practice the exact moment you open your fist until the β€œappearance” lines up perfectly with the shake β€” timing is everything in this one.

3 Trick 3

The Magnetic Pencil

Turn your hand upside down and a pencil stays stuck to your palm, defying gravity as if pulled by an invisible magnet.

  • 1 pencil
  • 1 rubber band (optional, for the beginner version)
Reveal the secret
  1. Hold the pencil against your palm and curl your middle and ring fingers over it to hold it in place, keeping your other fingers relaxed and open.
  2. Turn your hand palm-down slowly, keeping those two fingers gently clamped.
  3. From the front, your open thumb and first finger make it look like nothing is holding the pencil at all.
  4. Announce that your hand has become magnetic, then slowly turn your hand back over.

Practice tip: for an easier beginner version, hide a rubber band around your palm and tuck the pencil under it instead of using your fingers.
