Three kitchen-chemistry tricks that look like spells but are really real reactions.

Every kitchen is a secret laboratory

A note before you start: an earlier version of this page featured tricks with open flame and lab chemicals like potassium permanganate. We've replaced those with four reactions that are just as amazing to watch, use only kitchen ingredients, and are safe for kids to perform with an adult nearby — no fire, and nothing that isn't already in a pantry.

Each trick below still has a real chemistry lesson hiding inside it: acids and bases, surface tension, and gas bubbles doing the heavy lifting. That's the best kind of magic — the kind you can actually explain once the applause dies down.

For the classroom, not for home: Curious chemists may already know about flame-based demonstrations like the potassium-permanganate-and-glycerine reaction or the alcohol-soaked handkerchief trick. Both are real chemistry demonstrations, but they involve open flame and reactive chemicals that call for a trained adult, proper safety gear, and a controlled lab or classroom setting. They're mentioned here by name only — no method, no quantities — because they simply don't belong on a home activity page.

1 Trick 1

The Color-Changing Potion

A purple potion turns pink with one splash and blue-green with another — no dye required, just a secret ingredient hiding in a red cabbage.

2 cups shredded red cabbage
Hot water (ask an adult to pour)
A clear glass or jar
Vinegar
A spoonful of baking soda mixed with water

Reveal the secret

Ahead of time, have an adult pour hot water over the shredded red cabbage in a bowl and let it sit for 10 minutes, then strain out the purple liquid — that's your potion base.
Pour a little of the purple cabbage liquid into a clear glass for your audience to see.
Announce a magic word and add a splash of vinegar — the potion turns bright pink.
Pour a fresh glass of the purple liquid, say a different magic word, and stir in the baking soda mixture instead — this time it turns blue-green.

Why it works: red cabbage juice is a natural pH indicator — it turns pink around acids like vinegar and blue-green around bases like baking soda.

2 Trick 2

Magic Milk Fireworks

Drops of food coloring burst and swirl across a bowl of milk the instant a magic wand — really, a soapy cotton swab — touches the surface.

A shallow bowl
Whole milk
Food coloring (a few colors)
A cotton swab
Dish soap

Reveal the secret

Pour enough milk into the bowl to cover the bottom, about half an inch deep, and let it settle.
Add a few drops of different food colors near the center of the milk, without stirring.
Dip the cotton swab in dish soap so the tip is coated.
Touch the soapy swab to the center of the milk and watch the colors burst outward on their own.

Why it works: dish soap breaks the surface tension of the milk's fat molecules, and they scatter outward, carrying the color with them.

3 Trick 3

The Dancing Raisins

Drop plain raisins into a glass of clear soda and they'll start bobbing up and down on their own, like tiny dancers taking the stage.

A clear glass
Clear carbonated soda or sparkling water
A handful of raisins

Reveal the secret

Fill the glass with the carbonated soda, leaving a little room at the top.
Drop in five or six raisins and watch them sink to the bottom.
Wait a few seconds — tiny bubbles will cling to the wrinkly raisins and carry them up to the surface.
Once they reach the top, the bubbles pop and the raisins sink again, repeating the “dance” for several minutes.

Why it works: carbon dioxide bubbles in the soda stick to the rough, wrinkled skin of the raisins, making them briefly float, then sink again once the bubbles pop at the surface.

4 Trick 4

The Self-Inflating Balloon

A deflated balloon stretched over an empty bottle slowly puffs itself up, with nobody blowing a single breath into it.

An empty plastic bottle
Vinegar
Baking soda
A balloon
A funnel (or a rolled piece of paper)

Reveal the secret

Pour about 2 inches of vinegar into the empty bottle.
Use the funnel to add 2–3 tablespoons of baking soda into the balloon itself, keeping it out of the bottle for now.
Carefully stretch the neck of the balloon over the top of the bottle without letting any baking soda fall in yet.
Once the balloon is secure, lift it upright so the baking soda tips down into the vinegar, then stand back and watch the balloon inflate on its own.

Why it works: mixing vinegar (an acid) with baking soda (a base) creates carbon dioxide gas, which has nowhere to go but up into the balloon.
