The lineup

3 tricks in this category, each with a "you will need" list and a secret you can tap open when you're ready.

1 Trick 1

The Vanishing Coin

A coin sits in an open palm one second and is simply gone the next. It's the first trick most magicians ever learn, and it still fools grown-ups.

  • 1 coin
  • Both hands
Reveal the secret
  1. Hold the coin flat on your right palm and let everyone see it clearly.
  2. Say you're going to β€œthrow” the coin into your left hand. Bring your right hand up and over toward your left.
  3. As your right hand passes over your left, secretly keep the coin pinched in your right fingers instead of dropping it.
  4. Close your left hand into a fist as if it caught the coin, and let your right hand drop casually to your side.
  5. Look only at your closed left fist as you open it slowly β€” the empty hand sells the illusion.

Practice tip: rehearse the β€œtoss” motion until your eyes and your empty hand look completely convinced. Your audience will believe whatever your eyes believe.

2 Trick 2

Coin Through the Table

A coin is placed flat on the table, covered with your hand, and pushed straight down β€” passing clean through the solid wood.

  • 1 coin
  • A table
Reveal the secret
  1. Sit at the table with your knees together and place the coin flat on top of the table.
  2. Cover the coin completely with your right hand, and let your left hand rest just under the table's edge, out of sight.
  3. Push down firmly and say the magic word β€” at the same time, let the coin slide off the table's edge into your waiting left hand below.
  4. Keep your right hand pressed flat on the table for a beat longer, as if the coin is still trapped underneath.
  5. Lift your right hand to show the coin is β€œgone,” then reach under the table with your left hand to reveal it.

Practice tip: this trick relies entirely on misdirection β€” talk and make eye contact while your top hand presses down, so no one is watching your lap.

3 Trick 3

Coin Behind the Ear

A coin seems to appear from behind a friend's ear out of thin air β€” a classic sleight every magician learns early.

  • 1 coin
Reveal the secret
  1. Secretly hold a coin in your right hand using a β€œfinger palm” β€” pressed flat against your curled ring and pinky fingers, hidden from view.
  2. Reach toward your friend's ear with that same hand, fingers relaxed enough that the hidden coin doesn't show.
  3. As your fingers reach the ear, straighten your ring and pinky fingers just enough to let the coin roll forward into view between your thumb and first finger.
  4. Announce that you found something behind their ear, and hold up the coin.

Practice tip: practice the finger palm in a mirror first β€” a relaxed, open-looking hand is what sells the β€œappearance.”
