Frithiof the Bold
Frithiof was raised among the fjords and forests of ancient Norway, grandson of the legendary Viking known simply as Viking, said to have been the strongest sailor of his age. Frithiof's own father, Thorsten, had likewise earned fame at sea, and Frithiof grew up determined to live up to the name his family had built.
As a boy, Frithiof was raised alongside Halfdan and Helge, the two sons of King Bele, along with their younger sister, the beautiful Ingeborg. Frithiof and Ingeborg grew especially close through their shared childhood, and as the years passed, that friendship grew steadily into love.
Despite his enormous strength and skill, Frithiof was not born into royalty, and when King Bele passed away, Ingeborg's brothers, now kings themselves, refused to allow their sister to marry a man they considered beneath her station. Bitter over the refusal, and further insulted by the new kings' treatment of him, Frithiof found himself pushed further and further from the life and love he had once hoped for.
Forced from his homeland, Frithiof took to the sea aboard his great ship, sailing to distant lands and facing storms, battles, and hardships that tested his strength and his patience in equal measure. Through it all, his thoughts remained with Ingeborg, even as circumstances kept them apart for many long years.
Frithiof's story, unlike many tragic legends of star-crossed lovers, is remembered for its hopeful ending. After years of exile, hardship, and growth, Frithiof eventually returned home a wiser and more respected man, and was at last reconciled with Ingeborg's family, allowing the two who had loved each other since childhood to finally be together.
