Three demon brothers once ruled three flying cities so well-protected that no ordinary weapon could ever touch them. Defeating them would take something no one had ever attempted before — a single arrow, launched using the whole universe as a bow.

Three Cities, One Impossible Condition

After the eventual defeat of the demon Tarakasura, his three surviving sons — Tarakaksha, Kamalaksha, and Vidyunmali — retreated into the forest and performed years of severe penance directed at Brahma, hoping to secure a power that would protect their family line forever. They first asked for complete immortality, but Brahma, following the deeper laws of creation, refused such a request outright.

Undeterred, the brothers modified their request. They asked instead for three magnificent, independently flying cities — one built of gold, one of silver, and one of iron — that would drift separately through different realms of existence, only ever aligning together perfectly for a single, brief moment once every thousand years.

Believing such a rare and specific condition made destruction essentially impossible, Brahma granted the boon, and the legendary architect Maya Danava set about constructing the three extraordinary cities: the golden city adrift in the heavens, ruled by Tarakaksha; the silver city floating through the skies, ruled by Kamalaksha; and the iron city resting upon the earth itself, ruled by Vidyunmali. Believing themselves entirely untouchable, the three brothers soon began launching relentless attacks against the order of the universe, growing bolder with each passing year.

Building the Ultimate Chariot

As the long-awaited thousand-year moment finally approached — the single instant when all three flying cities would align perfectly along one straight line — the gods understood that Lord Shiva alone could meet the impossible condition required to destroy them all at once. But even Shiva would need help assembling a weapon equal to such an extraordinary task.

The gods gathered every fundamental part of the universe together into a single, unprecedented weapon system. The Earth itself was transformed into Shiva's chariot; the sun and the moon became its two great wheels; Brahma stepped forward to take up the reins as charioteer; the towering Mount Meru bent itself into the shape of a mighty bow; and the great cosmic serpent Vasuki stretched himself taut to serve as the bowstring.

Finally, in an act of extraordinary cooperation between the gods, Lord Vishnu himself agreed to become the very tip of the arrow that would be loosed — lending his own boundless power directly to the weapon that would soon be fired.

One Arrow, Three Cities

As the precise, long-awaited millennial moment finally arrived, the three flying cities drifted slowly into position, aligning into a single, flawless line for the first time in a thousand years. Shiva, seated upon his extraordinary chariot, drew the great bowstring back with steady, deliberate focus, waiting for the exact instant the alignment would be perfect.

The moment it was, he released the arrow. It tore through the golden city, then the silver, then the iron, all three at once, in a single continuous motion, igniting a tremendous firestorm that consumed the cities entirely along with the corrupt power that had ruled from within them.

From that day forward, Lord Shiva was given a new name in honour of this extraordinary feat: Tripurantaka, 'the destroyer of the three cities' — a title still remembered today wherever this story of unity and precision is told.
