The Decision of Libuscha
Near Grunberg Castle in the ancient land of Bohemia, two brothers named Staglow and Chrudis, sons of the noble house of Klemowita, fell into a bitter dispute after the death of their father. Chrudis, the elder brother, believed the custom of the land entitled him to inherit the entire estate, while Staglow, the younger, insisted that fairness demanded the property be divided equally between them.
Unable to settle the matter between themselves, and unwilling to let their quarrel turn to violence, the brothers agreed to bring their dispute before Libuscha, the wise and celebrated princess whose fair judgements were known and trusted throughout Bohemia.
Libuscha listened carefully to both brothers, weighing custom against fairness, and family duty against the bond that ought to exist between siblings. Unlike many rulers of her time, who might have simply favoured the elder son out of tradition alone, Libuscha considered the matter with the kind of thoughtful patience that had earned her such a strong reputation for wisdom.
